How Dental Implants Work

How Dental Implants Work

Dental implants are the solution to tooth loss people suffer from.  The implant can be the solution to one lost tooth, several, or all teeth.  Tooth loss can stem from a number of causes.  The most popular reasons why a person loses teeth are:

  • Mouth trauma (think hockey players and automobile accidents)
  • Tooth decay from a failure to properly brush and floss regularly
  • Failure of a root canal
  • Gum disease
The loss of teeth can result in adverse social consequences for an individual.  Many clients are reluctant to engage in conversations with others or even smile!  Fortunately, dental implants are a proven solution to replace the gaps in your teeth and give you a smile you have always wanted.
As you can see from the diagram to the right, the implant itself is made to mimick the makeup and look of your natural teeth.  The dental implant is made up of three parts: the titanium implant that is inserted into the jawbone, the abutment (which fits over portion of the implant that extends above the gum line), and the crown.  The crown is specially made by the Doctor to fit the specific style and contours of your teeth.

In addition to replacing lost teeth for the reasons stated above, dental implants are a great alternative to dentures.  Because the implant itself is permanently affixed to your mouth, the need for constant care and upkeep associated with dentures is eliminated.

Because of advances in dental technology, dental implants can normally be completed in only one visit.  Follow up visits are scheduled following the installation of the implants to ensure that your gum line is properly healing following the procedure.
